Bitcoin Today 18/02/2025: BTC Price Drops as Memecoins Impact Hits Solana

The cryptocurrency market opened on a bearish note today, February 18, with Bitcoin (BTC) and other major cryptocurrencies seeing significant declines. Bitcoin , the main cryptocurrency on the market, saw its price fall 0.3% in the last 24 hours, reaching the mark of US$ 95.731. This is the worst price for BTC in a week, and the accumulated drop in the last 30 days already reaches 8.5%.

At the time of publication, the price of Bitcoin was quoted at US$ 95.673,53 with a decrease of 0.3% in the last 24 hours, equivalent to approximately R$ 548,860.03 BRL and € 91,382.61 EUR.

Today's downward movement is not restricted to Bitcoin. Almost all digital assets in the top 100 are trading at a loss, including Ethereum (ETH), down 2.1%, XRP, down 3.4%, and Dogecoin (DOGE), down 4.5%. Among the most popular cryptocurrencies, the negative highlight is Solana (SOL), which leads the losses, down 8.5% this morning, reaching a price of US$ 168,39.

The recent memecoin crisis on the Solana network appears to be one of the main factors contributing to the cryptocurrency’s downfall. The proliferation of controversial memecoins, such as LIBRA, promoted by the president of Argentina , Javier Milei, has caused significant losses to users. The situation is aggravated by the controversy surrounding US President Donald Trump's TRUMP memecoin, launched in January, which caused a “liquidity drain” on the Solana network.

Looking at recent on-chain movements, analytics platform Glassnode highlighted SOL’s development since early 2025, drawing attention to its recent drop. “Since the start of the year, Solana has outperformed Ethereum for 23 of the 49 days. However, $SOL has been more sensitive to recent drawdowns, with the 30D price change recording -32% on Feb 17 (ETH: -17%, BTC: -8%).”
