Lifeboat Foundation Accepts Cryptocurrency Donations but Non-Profit Status in Doubt
The Lifeboat Foundation claims to be dedicated to the "preservation of humanity" and has been associated with Jeffrey Epstein, Vitalik Buterin, and other notable figures. Despite its claimed non-profit 501(c)(3) status, it has been on the IRS's automatic revocation list since 2020. The foundation has been accepting cryptocurrency donations since 2013, with the first donation coming in the form of 500 Bitcoin from Brian Cartmell, and currently holds a large amount of cryptocurrency that was not immediately converted to fiat currency. Donors, which include Jaan Tallinn and Charlie Shrem, have received more than 1,100 Bitcoin and 190 Ether in total. Currently, most of the donors are businesses looking to boost their search engine rankings by displaying their names and links on their websites.
