Following the successful launch of its open mainnet last month, Pi Network (PI), the mobile-based cryptocurrency project, has rolled out new updates focused on mainnet migrations and account verification.

On March 29, 2025, the team announced key improvements aimed at strengthening security and ensuring a smoother experience for its global community of “Pioneers.” These updates are part of Pi Network’s ongoing efforts to refine its platform as it continues to grow. Here’s what’s new and what it means for users.

Switching from Phone Numbers to Email-Based Authentication

Pi Network originally relied on phone numbers as the main way to verify user accounts. This SMS-based system worked well in the beginning but started causing problems as the network expanded globally. Issues like inconsistent telecom regulations, unreliable text message delivery, and carrier restrictions made the process frustrating for many users.

To fix this, Pi Network is moving to an email-based two-factor authentication (2FA) system. This update eliminates the challenges tied to SMS while improving security with a more reliable verification method. Alongside existing Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, this change also opens the door for future security upgrades like passkeys and biometric authentication. The goal is to make sure users can access their accounts securely without dealing with SMS-related delays or failures.

Making Mainnet Migrations More Secure

On March 13, 2025, Pi Network released a two-factor authentication (2FA) feature that requires some Pioneers to complete 2FA before their Pi is successfully migrated to the Mainnet blockchain.

Switching to email-based 2FA created an issue since many users never linked an email when setting up their accounts. Some had outdated or incorrect email addresses, while others used the same email for multiple accounts. To prevent potential security risks, Pi Network temporarily paused mainnet migrations while reviewing the email verification process.

During this pause, the team analyzed how users verified their emails and set up 2FA. In some cases, they introduced extra steps like liveness checks or additional SMS verification to ensure everything was done properly. Since mainnet migration is a crucial step where mined Pi coins officially move to the blockchain, Pi Network wanted to make sure the process remained secure and fair.

Migrations Resume

Now that security checks are complete, Pi Network has resumed mainnet migrations, rolling them out gradually to avoid issues. As more users switch to email-based verification, the process will continue expanding. The team is prioritizing security and stability over rushing the transition, making sure everything runs smoothly.

For Pioneers, this means now is the time to verify a trusted email and complete any pending authentication steps.
