According to Jinse Finance, OpenAI has requested that California’s political and financial regulatory authorities investigate a nonprofit organization challenging its multibillion-dollar business plans, accusing it of violating state lobbying laws and once again raising questions about the organization’s ties to Elon Musk. The complaint, submitted to the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), alleges that the “Coalition for AI Nonprofit Integrity” (CANI) may have fabricated the identities of its leaders and failed to report lobbying expenditures related to a now-weakened state bill that could have prevented the maker of ChatGPT from converting into a for-profit entity. This marks the latest escalation in OpenAI’s efforts to pressure the organization. Meanwhile, OpenAI is also engaged in a legal battle with Musk, a former business partner who opposes the company’s restructuring plan for fundraising, arguing that it deviates from its original nonprofit mission to “serve the public interest.” CANI spokesperson Becky Warren stated in an email that her organization had not received the complaint as of Thursday.
