Meta AI chief discusses using Google and OpenAI models in applications

Morning of August 30, East 8th District time, according to reports, Meta is considering partnering with competitors Google or OpenAI to enhance the artificial intelligence capabilities in its applications.
The report states that the head of Meta's newly established artificial intelligence organization, "Meta Superintelligence Labs," has begun studying the integration of Google's Gemini model—which will provide conversational text responses for Meta's core chatbot "Meta AI" and handle user-submitted queries.
The discussions also include leveraging OpenAI's models to provide technical support for "Meta AI" and other AI features within Meta's social media applications.
The report points out that before Meta's self-developed models achieve further progress, any cooperation reached with external model providers such as Google or OpenAI may only be a temporary measure to improve the performance of its AI products. The report also mentions that the primary task of "Meta Superintelligence Labs" is to ensure that its next-generation model, Llama5, is capable of competing with its rivals.
It is reported that Meta has already integrated external AI models into some internal employee tools. For example, the report, citing three sources familiar with the matter, says that employees can use Anthropic's model for programming work through the company's internal programming assistant.
A Meta spokesperson stated in a statement: "To build the best AI products, we are taking an 'all-around' strategy—which includes both independently developing world-leading models and collaborating with other companies, while also advancing technology open-sourcing."
OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft have not yet responded to requests for comment.
Earlier this year, Meta invested billions of dollars, hiring former ScaleAI CEO (Alexandr Wang) and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman to jointly lead the "Meta Superintelligence Labs"; at the same time, Meta also offered generous compensation packages to attract dozens of top AI researchers to join the project.
