Ethereum's Fusaka Update Doubles Storage Ability, Setting the Stage for a $1 Trillion Layer 2 Market
- Ethereum developers set Fusaka upgrade for Dec 3, 2025, to boost data capacity and L2 scalability via phased testnets and blob limit expansions. - BPO forks will incrementally raise blob limits from 6/9 to 14/21 by early 2026, doubling throughput without client updates. - PeerDAS sampling reduces node storage demands, while gas limit increases (45M→60M) enhance network resilience and transaction predictability. - Upgrade aims to bridge L2 adoption gaps (93% txns, 13.69% value) and could drive L2 market c

Ethereum’s development team has now confirmed December 3, 2025, as the official launch date for the Fusaka upgrade, a significant milestone in the network’s ongoing efforts to scale. The activation will be preceded by three staged public testnet launches in October 2025, taking place on Holesky, Sepolia, and Hoodi. Assuming these trials are successful, mainnet deployment will move forward as planned. Fusaka is set to boost both data availability and scalability on Ethereum, especially benefiting layer-2 (L2) rollups, by rolling out a host of technical upgrades and gradually increasing blob capacity ETH News: Fusaka Coming in December - CoinDesk [ 1 ].
One of the standout changes in Fusaka is the use of Blob Parameter Only (BPO) forks, which will allow for stepwise increases in blob limits. The initial upgrade retains the current blob target and maximum of 6 and 9, respectively. The first BPO fork, scheduled for December 17, 2025, will bump these limits to 10 and 15, followed by another fork on January 7, 2026, raising them further to 14 and 21. These incremental adjustments are aimed at doubling blob throughput on Ethereum without requiring node operators to update their client software, simplifying the upgrade process Ethereum Fusaka Upgrade Set for December 3 Mainnet Launch, … [ 2 ]. This stepwise rollout enables developers to observe system behavior and verify scalability improvements before the full deployment.
The Fusaka release will also activate PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling), a new feature that lightens storage and bandwidth demands on nodes. Through sampling instead of full blob storage, PeerDAS lets nodes confirm data availability more efficiently, which supports higher L2 transaction volumes and greater network performance. This feature is crucial for Ethereum’s broader goal of processing 12,000 transactions per second while safeguarding its decentralization and security Ethereum Fusaka hardfork set for December rollout: what does it … [ 3 ].
Beyond blob scalability, Fusaka also tackles issues around gas limits and network robustness. The block gas limit will rise from 45 million to 60 million, with further increases to 150 million planned for later stages. This change, along with a new transaction gas cap (EIP-7825), is intended to guard against denial-of-service attacks and maintain stable transaction costs. Additional enhancements include revised MODEXP precompile pricing and RLP block size adjustments to improve computational efficiency and minimize network delays Fulu-Osaka (Fusaka) | ethereum.org [ 4 ].
Fusaka’s introduction is timed to support Ethereum’s larger roadmap, strengthening the base protocol as layer-2 adoption accelerates. Currently, over 93% of
