Shiba Inu investors are increasingly being targeted by scams involving usernames, where fraudsters are abusing the credibility of verified handles to pose as well-known community members and orchestrate crypto-related schemes. The dedicated Shiba Inu account Susbarium has sounded urgent alerts, revealing that scammers are willing to pay hefty amounts for premium usernames, which are subsequently used to spread false information, phishing scams, and fake wallet links. By capitalizing on the perceived legitimacy of verified accounts, these impersonators successfully trick individuals into giving up their private keys or transferring digital assets title1 [ 1 ].

Such fraudulent operations often start with unsolicited direct messages proposing to buy a user’s handle, a ploy that has gained traction within crypto circles. While scammers highlight lucrative offers, security professionals warn that these types of transactions—particularly those happening outside official platforms or via private chats—expose users to significant threats. Even legitimate services like Fragment, which offer secure and authorized username transfers, require vigilance from users due to the risk of exploitation title2 [ 2 ]. Charles Guillemet, CTO at Ledger, has reiterated this caution, advising hardware wallet owners to carefully verify every transaction and never disclose confidential data title3 [ 3 ].

The

ecosystem has become a prime target, with scammers launching fake profiles that mirror official project channels like Shibarium. These fake accounts are used to distribute harmful links, directing victims to phishing websites or unauthorized apps, which in turn facilitate the theft of crypto assets. There have been recent cases, such as a group fraudulently promising $2,000 in KNINE tokens in return for wallet connections, which actually led to users’ funds being siphoned off title4 [ 4 ]. Another tactic, known as “wallet rectification,” involves attackers pretending to be tech support and convincing users to reveal their private keys while claiming to fix account problems title5 [ 5 ].

To reduce these threats, community participants should take preventive actions. This includes activating privacy tools to block unauthorized group invitations and always checking for official verification badges or leader endorsements before trusting any account. It is crucial to avoid linking wallets to platforms without verification and never share seed phrases or private keys. Susbarium urges users to double-check all information with reliable sources since fake giveaways, airdrops, and phishing campaigns remain widespread title6 [ 6 ].

The repercussions of these schemes are not confined to the Shiba Inu community; impersonation attacks are becoming more common across the crypto landscape. Recently, blockchain investigator uncovered 12 defunct Solana-based

coin initiatives that amassed a total of $26.7 million, highlighting the broader extent of fraud in decentralized finance title7 [ 7 ]. As scammers continue to exploit new weaknesses, staying alert is more important than ever.
