PayPal integrates payments with ChatGPT and expands use of PYUSD stablecoin

- ACP will allow direct purchase of products via AI

PayPal entered into an exclusive partnership with OpenAI, transforming ChatGPT into a shopping environment with instant payments. The announcement on October 28th marks the debut of the PayPal wallet in the chatbot, allowing users to complete transactions within the conversation with the AI.
The new feature will be powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), a framework that creates a direct link between customers, merchants, and payment systems. PayPal will operate behind the scenes, validating payments, managing merchant data, and offering fast checkout with options such as card, balance, and cryptocurrency.
According to PayPal CEO Alex Chriss, the experience reduces steps and simplifies online purchases. He stated that consumers can "go from chat to checkout in just a few taps," taking advantage of buyer protection and the options already available on the platform.
The integration will also give businesses the ability to have their products discovered on ChatGPT. Starting in 2026, stores connected to ACP will be able to list catalogs that users can find and purchase without leaving the chat window. The company emphasized that this eliminates the need to set up individual integrations with each merchant.
The agreement also expands PayPal's internal artificial intelligence initiatives. The company will increase the use of ChatGPT Enterprise among its more than 24 employees, including features like Codex, which helps engineering teams with development processes.
PayPal has been expanding its presence in the cryptocurrency market since the launch of the PYUSD stablecoin. The dollar-backed token recently surpassed a circulating supply of $2,54 billion. The company also enabled P2P transfers of assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin within its app in the United States, reinforcing the integration between traditional payment methods and digital assets.
The new partnership positions PayPal as one of the leading companies connecting fintech, AI, and cryptocurrencies into a single payment flow. This advance adds to the growing interest in solutions that enable purchases through conversational interfaces, with instant settlement and greater accessibility for global digital commerce.
