ChatGPT rolls out group conversations worldwide

OpenAI revealed on Thursday that ChatGPT’s group chat feature is now available worldwide for users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscriptions. This follows a recent limited rollout in certain areas, such as Japan and New Zealand, which began last week.

With this new feature, multiple users can interact with each other and ChatGPT within a single conversation. According to OpenAI, this update transforms ChatGPT from a personal assistant into a collaborative hub where friends, colleagues, or family members can join forces to organize, brainstorm, and make decisions together.

OpenAI envisions group chats as a tool for organizing travel, co-authoring documents, resolving disagreements, or collaborating on research, with ChatGPT assisting by searching, summarizing, and comparing information as needed.

Each group chat can include up to 20 participants, provided they accept an invitation. OpenAI notes that personal preferences and memory remain confidential for each individual.

To initiate a group chat, users simply tap the people icon and add others, either by inviting them directly or sharing a link. All participants will be prompted to create a brief profile including their name, username, and a photo.

It’s important to mention that when someone is added to an ongoing chat, a new conversation is started, so the original chat remains unchanged.

OpenAI explains that ChatGPT can discern when to participate and when to remain silent in group discussions. Users can mention “ChatGPT” to prompt a response. Additionally, ChatGPT is able to react to messages with emojis and refer to users’ profile pictures.

This update is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to evolve ChatGPT from a basic chatbot into a more interactive social platform. The company says that group chats are just the first step toward making ChatGPT a collaborative space rather than a solo tool.

“In the future, we expect ChatGPT to take on a more engaged role in group conversations, supporting people as they plan, create, and execute tasks together,” OpenAI shared in an email to TechCrunch.

This announcement comes less than two weeks after the debut of GPT-5.1, which introduced both Instant and Thinking model options. Back in September, OpenAI also launched Sora, a social app that lets users create and share videos of themselves and friends on a TikTok-like feed.
