Facebook Messenger Desktop App Discontinued

As of December 15, 2025, Facebook Messenger’s dedicated desktop application for both Mac and Windows has been officially retired. Users attempting to access the app are now being redirected to the Facebook website to continue their conversations.

Initially introduced during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Messenger’s desktop version struggled to compete with business-oriented platforms such as Zoom. It lacked features like large group video calls, screen sharing, and convenient link sharing, which limited its appeal for many users.

Signs of the app’s diminishing significance to Meta were apparent even before the official announcement of its discontinuation in October.

Changes Leading Up to the Shutdown

  • In 2023, Facebook began integrating Messenger back into the main Facebook application.
  • Recently, Meta updated the technology behind the Mac version of Messenger. The app was rebuilt using Catalyst, a tool that allows iPad apps to run on Mac. However, this approach received criticism from both developers, who found it required extra effort, and users, who felt the app didn’t offer a truly native experience.
  • Prior to adopting Catalyst, the Mac app was developed with Electron and later transitioned to React Native Desktop, according to a former Meta engineer.
  • On Windows, Messenger shifted to a progressive web app format last year.

These technical changes, along with the move to reintegrate Messenger into Facebook, likely contributed to a decline in demand for a standalone desktop app. Meta’s strategy appeared focused on revitalizing engagement with its main social platform.

Transition Details for Users

Earlier this fall, Meta notified users that the desktop app would be phased out by the end of the year. Users were advised to set up a PIN to preserve their chat history before switching to the web version.

Those who use Messenger independently of a Facebook account are now being sent to Messenger.com, where they can continue to access their messages without needing to sign up for Facebook.

For further details about this transition, users can visit Facebook’s help center, which provides dedicated guidance for both Mac and Windows users.
