What is Ren (REN)?
Ren is a decentralized protocol that enables you to move your digital assets and perform various activities across multiple blockchain platforms. It is powered by the Ren Virtual Machine (RenVM), a network that connects blockchains and allows interoperability between them.
The project was created by Taiyang Zhang and Loong Wang, two software engineers from Singapore in 2017. Till now, the Ren team is still based in Singapore.
How Ren (REN) Works
RenVM, the core of Ren, is run by nodes known as Darknodes. Each independent computer has to deposit 100,000 REN tokens to run a Darknode. This money is used to compensate any asset lost in the process of moving from one blockchain to another caused by a certain Darknode. Darknodes are randomly designated into groups called shards once a day, making the protocol less vulnerable to Sybil and colluding attacks.
With this setup, RenVM allows three kinds of cross-chain transactions:
• Lock and mint: sending an asset from its original chain to a host chain
• Burn and mint: sending an asset from a host chain to a different host chain
• Burn and release: sending an asset from a host chain to the original chain
How Many Ren (REN) Tokens Are in Circulation?
REN is the native token of the Ren network that follows the ERC-20 standards. It has one billion tokens in total supply, and almost 100% of them have been distributed.
